About three TMC water was released from Bhandardara dam for parched Marathwada region of Maharashtra chief executive engineer A N Mhaske said today.
Mr Mhaske of Nashik Irrigation Department said about three TMC water from Bhandardara dam was released. The water was released at 1130 hrs this morning and it will take three days to reach Jaikwadi dam in Marathwada.
He said irrigation department has implemented all provisions to reach the water safely to Maharathwada.
Mr Mhaske said three TMC water will be released tomorrow from Darna dam, which currently has 7,500 MCT water stock.
The district administration has decided to release three TMC water from Darna dam to Jayakwadi dam in water-scracity affected Marathwada.
The irrigation department was planning how and when the water should be released, he said.
The water shortage in Marathwada has become a serious issue and a meeting was held in Mantralaya recently. It was decided to release nine TMC water for Jayakwadi from Darna, Nilwande and three other dams. The three TMC water from Darna will be released by express canal only. As the water is being released, the electric supply along the canal route will be stopped, he added.
Meanwhile, local leaders and farmers in district has opposed to release water from Darna dam to Marathwada.
Police have made a heavy bandobast at Darna dam to avoid any untoward incident.
