The Goa cabinet has approved compensation upto Rs 10 lakh for women victims of rape, trafficking and acid attacks. Victims of child abuse are also covered under the scheme tagged as 'Victim Compensation Fund'. Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar announced this at a press conference after a cabinet meeting. He said the scheme is for victims or their dependents. "Whether or not the offender is identified, traced; the victim, if identified and trial has not taken place, can claim compensation. The scheme has been drafted after the request from the Union Home Ministry and Supreme Court directives," he said. The Centre had suggested that all states frame such schemes in accordance with the provisions of the newly created Section 357A of the CrPC. However, if any victim has claimed compensation under any other state or national schemes, or through any institution will not be eligible for the present scheme. Parrikar said a budgetary provision will be made every year and compensation will be given based on the Courtre recommendation.
