Floriculturists plant tulip bulbs to lure tourists to Kashmir
Srinagar's famed Tulip Garden is gearing up for the annual Tulip Festival, which will be held in spring.
A dedicated team of floriculture experts and gardeners are busy planting tulip bulbs ahead of the event.
Curator and caretaker of the Tulip Garden Javaid Ahmad Shah said labourers are working almost round-the-clock to ensure that the tulips bloom at the right time.
"Every year we bring about certain changes in the garden so that the tourists get to see something new. If they get to see the same thing then they will not enjoy. Therefore, we always try to bring about a change. We prepare the beds, make different designs; fertilisation is done so that the flower blooms properly. We are preparing for the Tulip Flower Show which is held during March-April," said Shah.
By April, tulips are usually in full bloom in and around Srinagar, lending an ethereal atmosphere to the valley, which has been dubbed by many as Paradise on Earth.
One of the gardeners, Ashiq Hussain, said that organic manure and fertilisers are being used and they are monitoring to ensure the tulips bloom properly during the season.
"We are using organic manures and putting extra efforts so that the flowers blossom at the right time in March. We are trying our level best so that the tulip flower blooms during the season and attract hordes of tourists to the valley," said Ashiq Hussain.
The tulips, set against the backdrop of the majestic snow-clad majestic Himalayan range, are a major tourist attraction.
Holland is globally renowned for its tulips but over the last few years an increasing number of tourists are visiting Kashmir for its flora.
Kashmir boasts of Asia's biggest tulip garden, named Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden at Siraj Bagh Cheshmashahi in Srinagar.
The festival is held annually in the month of April when tulips are in full bloom.
The sprawling tulips of varied colours make the garden look like a silken carpet with intricate designs.
