PM condoles loss of lives in Bangladesh fire
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has condoled the loss of lives in a fire tragedy in Bangladesh.
At least 124 people were killed in a fire in a garment factory in a multi-storied building near Dhaka that broke out on Saturday evening, officials said.
In his message, the PM said: "I am deeply saddened at the loss of life resulting from the fire in a garment factory outside Dhaka. On behalf of the government of India, I express to the government and people of Bangladesh our sincerest condolences at this tragedy."
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families," he said.
The fire in the factory at Ashulia in Narshinghapur could be brought under control only on Sunday morning. It started at around 7 pm on Saturday evening.
According to media reports, the fire started on the ground floor of the eight storied Tazreen Fashion near Dhaka Export Processing Zone and it spread up to the fifth floor, trapping many people inside.
Many died after they jumped off the floors of the building to escape the blaze.
