New RS Secretary-General Shumsher K Sheriff introduced to House

New Secretary-General Shumsher K Sheriff was today introduced to the Rajya Sabha by Chairman Hamid Ansari.

Mr Sheriff, IAS (AGMUT:77) took over as Secretary-General, Rajya Sabha in the rank and status of Cabinet Secretary on October 1. He will hold office till August 31, 2015.

An IAS officer of the 1977 batch, 59-year-old Sheriff has 35 years of administrative experience in government and held various positions both in the state, Centre and international assignments.

He has served as Deputy Commissioner in the North East during 1981-1984 in three districts, Tawang, Subansari and Dibang of Arunachal Pradesh.

From 1986-90, he was the head of Transport Department in the Delhi Government.

He was a member of the task force to prepare the report for Metro in the national capital. Subsequently he served as Director in the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Government of India from 1990-1992 and looked after bilateral assistance from European countries.

Thereafter, Mr Sheriff was the head of the Vice President's Secretariat and advised on parliamentary matters from 1992 to 1997. He was Joint Secretary to President from 1997 to 2002 and concurrently discharged the responsibilities of the Secretary to President from 2000-2002.

He also served as Senior Advisor to the Executive Director of Asian Development Bank at Manila, the Philippines from 2002-2005. Thereafter, he was posted as Chief Secretary, Andaman and Nicobar Islands from 2006-2007 where he had a major task of tsunami rehabilitation.

In 2007, he was appointed as Principal Secretary Home, Government of Delhi and later as Secretary to Vice President.
