A 37-year-old village sarpanch was killed by a gang of armed outlaws at Tekda Motla village in Sironcha taluka of Gadchiroli district in Maharashtra.
The victim, identified as Narayan Shakar Sirangi, was last night pulled out forcefully from his residence by a group of around 20 naxals and brought to Somanpalli road and allegedly shot dead. Soon after the incident the Naxals fled the spot, police said today.
The reason behind the elimination of the sarpanch was still unknown but, sources said, Sirangi was murdered for his alleged activity in illegal practices in the area.
Asarali police station has registered an offence against the Naxals under sections 302, 120(b), 364, 506, 143, 144, 147, 148, 149 of Indian Penal Code and section 3 (25) of Indian Arms Act.
Further investigation was underway, the sources added.
