Most Americans think Petraeus needed to resign following sex scandal: Poll
A majority of Americans believe that David Petraeus had to leave the CIA after admitting to an affair with his biographer, Paula Broadwell, according to a poll.
According to a Gallup Poll 51 percent of Americans said that Petraeus needed to go, while 41 percent think he should have stayed on.
The poll also showed that only 42 percent non-white Americans thought Petraeus needed to resign, and 46 percent think he could have stayed, Politico reports.
Republicans were most likely to say that Petraeus had to leave, with 56 percent supporting his departure, the poll said.
According to the poll, four-in-10 Americans still have a positive opinion of Petraeus, and only 30 percent have a negative opinion.
That's a dramatic change from March 2011, when only 11 percent of Americans had an unfavorable opinion of Petraeus and 55 percent looked at him favorably, the report said.
