Ajmal Kasab, the 26/11 Mumbai attack convict, was hanged at Pune's Yerawada Jail at 7:30am on Wednesday morning, Maharashtra home minister R.R. Patil said.
President Pranab Mukherjee had rejected Kasab's mercy petition on November 5.
Kasab was shifted to the Pune facility from Mumbai's Arthur Road Jail on Monday.
"His execution is a tribute to the victims of 26/11 attacks," said Patil.
Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan told CNN-IBN that secrecy had been maintained over Kasab's execution because the government did not want to compromise the security situation in any way.
The 2008 attack on Mumbai killed 166 people.
