Twenty fifth Southern Zonal Council meeting got underway with Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde chairing it, sans Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa and Kerala Chief Minister Oomman Chandy who are represented by their deputies.
While Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy, Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangaswamy and Karnataka Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar were participating, Tamil Nadu was represented by Minister of Finance O Panneerselvam.
The meeting will discuss, among other subjects, issues on security of fishermen, strengthening of drug control organisation and development of industrial corridor of the peninsular region of Southern States.
Extension of high-speed rail corridor between Thiruvananthapuram and Mangalore up to Udupi, peninsular tourism trains in Southern Zone, coastal erosion and matters related to police administrations, atrocities on SCs/STs, human trafficking and re-activating of the Southern Zonal Council are also on the agenda.
