A person was reportedly killed when police and villagers clashed in West Bengal's Tehatta in southern district of Nadia on Wednesday.
The villagers reportedly blocked roads after they were denied permission to hold Jagadhatri Puja at a particular place.
It was alleged that the police resorted to firing and lathi-charge to disperse protesters.
The deceased was identified as one Ashok Sen, locals claimed.
However, the police have denied it.
The protesters reportedly torched three police vans during the incident.
Immediately after the incident, the Chief Secretary called a meeting with state police chiefs and important bureaucrats in Kolkata.
According to reports, the meeting was called on the instruction on West Benhal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
