Desperate to beat the persisting smog in the capital, the Delhi government wants polluting vehicles to be fined as much as Rs.2,000, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said Monday.
The decision was taken at a meeting called by the chief minister.
"The transport department and Delhi Police may be instructed to take action against grossly polluting vehicles and heavy fines amounting to Rs.2,000 may be imposed," Dikshit told reporters here.
The meeting was attended by Environment Pollution Control Authority (EPCA) chairman Bhure Lal, Centre for Science director Sunita Narain and officials of the India Meteorological Department.
Bhure Lal warned that non-completion of expressways was leading to poor air quality in Delhi, a government statement said.
The meeting suggested that polluting commercial vehicles should not be allowed to enter Delhi.
