Psychotherapist and Author Sharon Diaz Offers At-home Grief Support Program for Children

SHELTON, Conn.: Public outcry from the devastating impact of tragedies such as suicide and the surge of deaths from the opioid crisis ignore one major factor - the children left behind in the wake of death.

These deaths, still shrouded in stigma, prevent many families from knowing where to turn to for help, leaving children alone in their pain after the loss of a parent, sibling or other cherished loved one.

To help, Sharon Diaz, Psychotherapist, Licensed Alcohol & Drug Counselor and Marriage & Family Therapist, created a digital, at-home grief support program called Melodee Roo & The Wantoks Too! Letters For Grieving Children Like You.

This program teaches coping skills that can last a lifetime by providing step by step guidance for children ages 6-12. It helps to improve their emotional intelligence, teaches communication and coping skills, helps to foster forgiveness and helps to build confidence and resilience.

"I've devoted 40 years of my career to help individuals and families heal from pain," Diaz asserts. "After my own family was left broken-hearted by the suicide of a family member, my mission was to make the life of grieving families, a little bit easier at the worst time in their life."

According to the American Foundation For Suicide Prevention, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in America, leaving millions of families bereft and struggling to cope with the devastation.

According to the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention, a record number of drug overdose deaths occurred in 2015: 52,404. And the rate continues to climb, estimated to be over 59,000 in 2017.

Diaz will be a Gold Level Sponsor for the American Foundation For Suicide Prevention's Out Of The Darkness Walk in Hamden, Ct. on October 8, 2017.

"Focus on the importance of suicide prevention and substance abuse treatment, must be coupled with helping children and families learn how to cope after the loss of their loved one."

Every family's grief story is unique. But there are common threads to healing. Melodee Roo & The Wantoks Too! Letters For Grieving Children Like You share these healing threads through story, songs, videos and Roo-Tivities to help children learn how to express their thoughts and feelings.

Comforting songs sung by Sara Vincent and written by renowned composer David Friedman, known for his musical contributions to several Disney animated films as well as numerous Broadway shows are included.
