Kannur,Kerala, Jul 13 : Electro-magnetic radiation from mobile phone would not result in cancer, according to Mr R Sankara Narayanan, Chairman of the Early Detection Prevention Group of International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), Lyon in France.
The research was conducted as a multinational study among the mobile users without any industry participation.
At a meet-the-press Programme here today, he said IARC had conducted research with the support of National Centres like RCC, MCCS as a complementary service.
The research report was published last month, said Mr Sankara Narayan who was also the head of the screening group of IARC.
He said cancer was a lifestyle disease and could be prevented by avoiding tobacco and alcohol and doing more physical activities. A healthy diet using more vegetables and fruits could also help in prevention of the disease. He emphasised on the importance of early detection of cervical, Oral and breast cancer.
He said breast cancer was emerging as the most potent threat for women in India with 70,000 of them dying annually.
Since a majority of them were in advanced stages of the disease, the rate of cure was less than 30 per cent.
The country also accounted for a third of oral cancer cases globally.
He also expressed concern over the lack of cervical screening services in India.
