Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday distanced itself from its leader Janardhan Dwivedi's statement on caste-based reservations.

Gandhi said that caste-based reservations system must continue.

"The Indian National Congress is of the firm opinion that the system of reservations for scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, and OBCs must continue. This is essential to deal with the discrimination imposed by centuries of subjugation and oppression," Gandhi said in a statement on Wednesday.

"The Indian national Congress believes in true equality and of oppurtunity for everyone," she said.

Dwivedi earlier said caste-based reservations should end.

"This (reservation) should have come to an end," Dwidevi was quoted as saying to media.
