Illegal mining: SIT to quiz ex-Goa CM

By, Digambar Kamat and under secretary and a suspended director, who are among six persons under the scanner for rampant illegal mining in the state, have been issued summons to appear before Goa Police's Special Investigation Team (SIT) for investigation.
The questioning will begin from Tuesday as the suspected accused are asked to appear before the SIT officials headed by Deputy Inspector General of Police K K Vyas.
Assistant Director of Mines Shyam Sawant and former Director of Mines from 2005-07 Bhinge will be the first to be quizzed on Tuesday while Kamat, Congress legislator from Margao constituency in South Goa, suspended Mines Director Arvind Lolienkar and another officer V P Shetye have been asked to appear on Feb 8.
Legal officer S Chandvani will be questioned on Feb 5. Vyas told reporters that the questioning will take place at Crime Branch office at Dona Paula.
The SIT is investigating a bunch of illegal mining cases of last one decade including the massive illegalities to the tune of Rs 35,000 crore. Various Congress leaders including the present leader of opposition and a party spokesperson have also been named in the scam.
