Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar today batted for self-regulation in media and said press freedom was imperative for vibrancy in democracy.

Mr Javadekar, who is also the member of the Press Council of India, took the charge of his Ministry this morning and interacted with senior officials of his ministry at the Shastri Bhawan.

Speaking to reporters after assuming charge, Mr Javadekar described freedom of press as the "pillar of democracy" and said press freedom was imperative for success of democracy as it gave a rainbow of opinions.

Mr Javadekar said institutions were important for functioning of democracy and priorities would be worked out after due consultation with stakeholders.

The Minister also touched upon the idea of "Mazboot Bharat, Viksit Bharat" reiterating the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in this regard.

"We have a majority for the government but we need cooperation of the entire country to make a strong and developed nation by 2025," he added.

Later, the Minister was briefed on the key initiatives, mandate and policy framework of the Ministry by Secretary (I and B) and other senior officials of the Ministry.
