Prime Minister Narendra Modi today sanctioned Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia to each of those killed and Rs 50,000 each to seriously injured in the Gorakhdham train accident in Uttar Pradesh yesterday and directed that best possible treatment be given to those injured.

The Prime Minister also directed the Railway Ministry to ensure that relief operations are carried out smoothly.

He said it must be seen that all the injured are provided the best possible medical care.

"The Prime Minister has sanctioned an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh each to the next of kin of those deceased from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund and Rs 50,000 each to those seriously injured in the accident," a spokesman for the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said.

The death toll in the tragedy rose to 23 after 11 more bodies were recovered from the wrecked bogies today.
