The National Human Rights Commission, taking cognizance of complaints, has issued notices to the Secretary, Prison Administration, Government of Maharashtra and Superintendent, Central Jail, Nagpur with the direction to provide adequate medical treatment to Dr. G.N. Saibaba, who was picked up by Gadchiroli Police of Maharashtra from Delhi University for alleged links with the Naxalites.

The Commission also decided to send an officer from its Investigation Division to Maurice Nagar and Civil Line Police Stations, Delhi to collect copies of records, if any, maintained at the Police Stations at the time of arrest of Dr. Saibaba.

The complainants had alleged that the arrest of Dr. Saibaba was made in violation of the mandatory provisions of Section 41, 41(b), 41(c), 49, 50, 50(a) and 55(a) of Cr.P.C. It is further stated by the complainant that Dr. Saibaba suffers from permanent post-polio paralysis of the legs. He is 90pc disabled. He is also heart patient with high blood pressure. Additionally, he suffers from spinal pain. But he was getting no medication in jail and had been put in a solitary cell.
