AAP worker who staged protest arrested
Police have arrested an Aam Aadmi Party worker who staged a protest by "washing dirty linen in public" to highlight the water clogging in drains on 100 feet road, near to Indira Gandhi square yesterday.
The worker, S Sundararajan, said he approached the civic official, with the plea to set right the drains so that water clogging will not happen.
Despite several requests, the drains were not cleared and it became a breeding ground for mosquitoes, he said and added that the water clogging was left unattended by the civic officials for quite some time. Yesterday, he reached the spot armed with a plastic bucket and some dirty clothes. Surprisingly police personnel were present even before his arrival. But unperturbed Sundararajan went ahead with his plan and washed the dirty clothes in the drain to symbolically register his protest.
Police moved in to warn him against his action, as he did not have the necessary permission. AAP leaders Dr V Rengarajan and R Ravi Srinivasan also reached the spot and entered into arguments with the police personnel. However, the police arrested Sundararajan later.
One side of the 100 feet road stretch is closed for traffic for constructing bridge.
