Jaya announces solatium for fisherman
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today announced a solatium of Rs five lakh to the family of a fisherman who was shot dead by sea pirates while fishing in a mechanised boat at Bahrain.
In a statement here, she expressed shock and grief over the killing of fisherman S Thomas Cleatus, who hailed from Rajamangalam in Kanniyakumari district of the State.
He was one among the seven Indian fishermen who were fishing off Bahrain when the sea pirates opened fire, killing Thomas Cleatus on the spot.
Ms Jayalalithaa expressed her heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and sanctioned an assistance of Rs five lakh from the Chief Minister's Public Relief Fund.
She said she had also directed the Fisheries Department Secretary to contact the Indian Embassy in Bahrain and take steps to bring the body of Thomas to Tamil Nadu.
