Noted scientist and Padma Vibhushan recipient R A Mashelkar, president of the Global Research alliance today exhorted students to follow the concept of Gandhian engineering that stresses on innovative techniques that benefits the entire society but not a few.

Delivering the convocation address on the subject 'Gandhian engineering more from less for more' at the fourth convocation of the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Kakinada (JNTUK) at the Alumni auditorium here, he said the industrial enterprises strive for getting ' more performance from less resources for deriving more profit.

But Gandhian engineering stresses on' getting more performance from less resources for more people (MLM). Gandhiji had preached-benefit for all-not for just a few but for more and more people. Hence the MLM concept is the essence of Gandhi engineering which needed to be observed scrupulously by young engineers, he added.

Pointing out that innovation-led inclusive development and growth could be achieved through Gandhian engineering, he opined that the MLM concept would pave the way for making India a role model for inclusive innovation led economic growth'.

'Affordability, sustainability and quality are the three core essence of Gandhian engineering. Every innovation that we do must meet these three benchmarks, because we don't want anything that is substandard, not sustainable or destroys the environment and ecological balance. And affordability because it has to be good for all, not good for some' he added.

Later, he presented PhDs to 34 research scholars and Gold medals to 24 meritorious students.

Earlier, vice-chancellor Dr G Tulasi Ram Das conferred honorary doctorate to Dr Mashelkar.

Rector Dr B Prabhakararao, registrar Dr GVR Prasadaraju, director of Evaluation Dr Ch Saibabu and other directors of JNTUK were among those attended.
