Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) today demanded that the Andhra Pradesh Government raise daily wage for MGNREGS works from Rs 149 to Rs 169, as specified in the Notification No 336 issued by Government of India on February 13, 2014.

Since the new wage was supposed to come into effect from April 1 as per the Notification, AAP Convenor B Ramakrishnam Raju said in a statement here today.

He said the increase in wage declared by the Centre did not go into effect, ostensibly due to the election code coming into effect. The Department of Rural Development had requested the Election Commission to increase the wage but the matter was not settled by the Commission. Now the election period was over, we request the Department of Rural Development to take appropriate action to increase the wage, he added.

From April 2 onwards, the MGNREGS workers had been deprived of the Rs 20 increase in daily wage rate that they were supposed to receive, he said.

In the Telangana and Andhra Pradesh states together, there were 34.23 lakh families which participated in MGNREGS works from April 1 to May 21. They received Rs 746.59 crore in wages at the old rate. If the new rate of Rs 169 was applied, they were entitled to receive an extra Rs 100.2 crore in lost wages, he said.

He demanded that the right to work be made a constitutional right and urged all unorganised sector workers to join hands with AAP to make this demand a reality.
