Agitation against Rajapakse visit to Delhi
Tamizhaga Vaazhvurimai Katchi headed by T Velmurugan today announced an agitation on May 26, the day when Mr Narendra Modi would be sworn in as Prime Minister, to condemn the invitation being extended to Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse for the function.
After calling on AIADMK supremo and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa to greet her for leading her party to a resounding win in the Lok Sabha polls, Mr Velmurugan said inviting Mr Rajkapakse for the swearing, in ceremony was aimed at insulting the sentiments of the Tamils.
"As per our party's policy and ideology, we oppose the visit of Mr Rajapakse. To condemn it, we will stage an agitation on May 26 in Chennai city," Mr Velmurugan said.
"We will seek support from various Tamil organisations for the agitation."
"We have approached the Chennai city Police Commissioner for permission. Soon after getting it we will decide the venue," he added.
He said he called on Ms Jayalalithaa to congratulate her for leading the AIADMK to a massive win in the LS polls. The AIADMK swept the polls winning 37 of the 39 seats it had contested in Tamil Nadu.
Mr Velmurugan said he also broached the Sri Lankan Tamils issue with the Chief Minister.
"I told the Chief Minister that with a new government at the Centre, the people of Tamil Nadu are pinning the hopes on her for a permanent solution," he added.
"The Chief Minister had said there will be no change in the basic ideology on the Lankan Tamils issue," Mr Velmurugan added.
