Slight tremors were felt in several places in Chennai and its suburbs following an earthquake of almost six magnitude this evening about 2150 hrs.


No casualties or any damage were reported from these areas', a senior Met official said.

The official said strong tremors were felt in Odisha, West Bengal and Jharkhand for about 15 seconds and Delhi too felt similar situation.

The 6.0 magnitude earthquake was at 18.3 north degree and 87.9 degree east of north west Bay of Bengal, which was about 200 km away from Visagapattinam of Andhra Pradesh.

According to the weather official, the tremors were felt at several places including Nungambakkam, Vellacherry and coastal belt of Ennore area. Coastal regions in the state have been put on high alert. 'However, there was no Tsunami alert issued by the Met Department', the official said.
