Organisation of People's Democratic Rights (OPDR) today demanded release of Delhi University Professor and noted public intellectual and activist Dr G N Ssaibaba, who was arrested by the Gadchiroli Police of Maharashtra, and called upon people to join agitation against his arrest.

OPDR General Secretary, Chigurupati Bhaskara Rao in a statement here alleged that the arrest was carried out like abduction while he was returning from exam duty. There was no need to detain him since he was already permanently detained by his 90 per cent disability, he regretted and alleged that the specific purpose of his arrest was to extract baseless confessions from him.

Mr Rao said Mr Saibaba was now in judicial custody in Nagpur Central Jail. There was no legal or logistical justification to keep Dr Saibaba in severe pain and discomfort, especially when he himself had cooperated fully with the state agencies.

"We, therefore, call upon all democratic voices to condemn this 'arrest' in the strongest terms and join us in our protest against it, and to demand that Dr Saibaba be released immediately and unconditionally," the OPDR leader said.
