Tobacco exports touches Rs 6,000 Cr.
The tobacco exports touched Rs 6,000 crore during the financial year 2013-14 and the board exported 2,34,850 tonnes of un-manufactured tobacco valued at Rs 4,842.01 crore while tobacco products worth Rs 1,217.30 crore were exported.
Addressing a press conference here today Tobacco Board Chairman Dr K Gopal said 2,64,384 tonnes of tobacco and tobacco products worth Rs 6,059.31crore had been exported. Similarly, the 'Flue Cured Virginia' tobacco exports had also crossed over the previous highest record of 1,74,274 metric tones during the 2009-10 and reached a peak 1,80,187 metric tones valued at Rs 4,085,90 crore.
He informed that India had exported unmanufactured tobacco to Belgium, Egypt, Russia, Korea, Philippines, USA, UAE, Netherlands, Germany, Yemen, Nepal and Poland. The Tobacco Board had given the opportunity to the interested tobacco traders for adoption of whole village demonstration of 'Good Agriculture Practices' of the board, he added. Mr Gopal said the board had taken steps to improve the
"brand image" for Indian tobacco in the international market. The Board participated in the trade fairs organised at Tanzania, World Tobacco Europe 2013, Hamburg, and Germany.
The Tobacco Board Chairman explained that the board had taken a special care in highlighting the salient features of Indian unmanufactured tobacco in the international market and giving wide publicity on the efforts put forth by the tobacco industry in producing quality tobacco.
Mr Gopal said, "due to increase of tobacco exports, the demand for tobacco will increase in the domestic market consequently the farmers will get the better price. As many 2,25,000 farmers in Andhra and Karnataka states have already benefitted."
He said as against 180 million kgs of tobacco produced in Andhra Pradesh, the traders had purchased 75 million kgs of tobacco stocks at various auction platforms. "We will complete the tobacco auctions would be completed by the end of July," he added.
