We will remain non political and also not resign, sarpanchs, panchs
Deciding not to resign, the sarpanchs and panchs today said they will not associate themselves with any political party in Jammu and Kashmir.
"We were elected on non-party basis therefore we have decided not to associate ourselves with any political party, the All Jammu and Kashmir Panchayat Conference (AJKPC)" said in a statement after a meeting here today.
The statement issued at the end of the day-long meeting said more than 30 thousand Panchs and Sarpanchs have decided not to resign.
Hundreds of sarpanchs and panchs have announced their resignation in the Kashmir valley through paid advertisements in local urdu and english newspaper after the killing of some members in the valley recently.
The statement said,"members were of the view that they were elected on non-party basis by about 70 per cent voters in their respective areas for local development.
The people of our areas have given us mandate for development of our local areas, therefore no sarpanch or panch should associate themselves with any political organisation.
The speakers highligted the positive role played by panchs and sarpanch, particularly in road sector, NREGA, rural sector, social welfare, health, education and housing sector.
Speaking on the occasion chairman of Kashmir Society Farooq Ahmad Renzu advised all the Panchs and Sarpanchs to devote themselves exclusively for developmental purposes.
However, the speakers expressed their concern for mounting of threat perceptions on Panchs and Sarpanchs for unknown reasons.
The speakers were of the opinion that it is because of this institution being ignored by the concerned it has been made target as nobody wants to share their power with them and appease them by simple statements which receive negative reactions from other corners.
They appealed to all concerned that henceforth they should be treated completely non-political and no Panch or Sarpanch should be considered member of any political organisation.
Speakers also appealed to all Panchs and Sarpanchs to adhere to the non political character while serving in their respective areas by ensuring to execute the developmental works on non partisan bases so that no local rivalry is allowed.
They also decided that the forum shall not make any negative statement against any other political or non political forum or speak anything against any political entity whatsoever ideology he believes.
The Panchs and Sarpanchs shall keep good relation with all who are able to provide key role in development of their areas and over all development of the state, irrespective of any political thought or ideology.
