The National Fish Workers Forum(NFF) today urged prime minister designate Narendra Modi to provide a ministerial berth in the central cabinet to a fisherman representative of the 16th Lok Sabha.

Talking to newspersons here, NFF chairperson M Illango thanked the BJP for electing a fisherman from Gujarat to the Rajya Sabha unopposed in March this year.

Mr Illango said to press their demands, the NFF would write a letter to Mr Modi after he assumes the office of the PM and a delegation led by him would meet Mr Modi.

Mr Illango also urged for the creation of a separate ministry for fisheries at the Centre. He pointed out that during the past 55 years of rule, a fisherman was not given a ministerial berth at the Centre by any government.

Pointing out the efforts taken by the NFF to achieve its demands during the Congress regime, Mr Illango also wanted the Centre to include the fishermen in the scheduled tribe list.
