Five United A'chik Liberation Army (UALA) militants were killed and a police official was injured today in a gunfight with security forces in Meghalaya, police official said.


The gunfight took place at Chiokgre area in East Garo Hills district at around 0430 hrs, about 300 Km west of Shillong, the state capital of Meghalaya when heavily armed UALA militants opened at the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) and Combat Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) commandos.

"A joint team of police, SWAT and CoBRA commandos raided the Chiokgre following specific intelligence inputs about the presence of a group of UALA Chief chief Singbirth Marak alias Norrok X Momin," East Garo Hills Superintendent of Police, Davies R Marak, said.

There was a firefight soon after the security forces entered the area.

"The encounter lasted for close to three hours and we managed to gun down five of them. However, the Norrok managed to escaped from the site," he said.

Security forces recovered three AK rifles, one pistols, five magasines and 108 rounds of live ammunition, besides incriminating documents from the slain militants.

The slain militants were identified as Seargent Major Kalam R Marak, Corporal Batnagar R Marak, Corporal Dikdik Momin, Private soldiers Sengnang Sangma and Walle N Marak from the identity cards recovered from the respective bodies.

Meanwhile, police have launched a combing operation to nab the fleeing militant leader.
