Omar put under house arrest, ahead of death anniversary of his father
Chairman of moderate Hurriyat Conference (HC) Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq has been put under house arrest this morning, a day before the death anniversary of his father Mirwaiz Moulvi Farooq.
Raids are being conducted to arrest other senior leaders of the amalgam since last evening, a spokesman of the HC Advocate Shahidul Islam said.
He said HC had announced a number of programmes to pay tributes to Mirwaiz Farooq, who was martyred by unidentified gunmen in his Nigeen house on May 21, 1990.
However, a large number of security forces and state police personnel had been deployed outside Nigeen house of Mirwaiz.
Mr Islam said Mirwaiz was informed that he cannot leave as he has been put under house arrest.
He said a number of other hurriyat leaders had been arrested during the past 24 hours and raids were being conducted on the house of other senior leaders.
