Lakhs of devotees from various parts of the country and abroad witnessed the spectacular event of 'Lord Kallazhagar entering the River Vaigai,' here today.


The event observed with religious fervor, is considered as one of the grandest celebrations on the sub-Continent, was held as part of the ongoing 12-day annual 'Chithirai Brahmotsavam' festival of the world-renowned 'Sri Meenakshi-Sundareswarar Temple.'

The decorated idol of Lord Sundararaja Perumal, popularly called as 'Lord Kallazhagar' mounted on the 'Thanga Kuthirai Vahanam' (Golden Horse drawn vehicle) was taken out in a procession from the 'Lord Prasanna Venkatachalapathy Perumal Temple' at Tallakulam in the city, followed by thousands of devotees chanting 'Govinda Govinda,' entered into the River Vaigai, this morning. Before the 'Lord' starts for the event, a garland of Tulsi from 'Sri Andal Temple' at Srivilliputhur was adorned to him, which is a traditional practice to express the affection of Goddess Andal towards Lord Kallazhagar.

Myths have it that Lord Kallazhagar enters the river on the third day after the Celestial wedding of Goddess Meenakshi with Lord Sundareswarar at the temple.

This grand festival is a classic example of uniting Saivites and Vaishnavites. The district administration in coordination with police and other departments has made elaborate arrangements for the event. A local holiday was declared for Madurai district for this festival.
