Woman air passenger arrested for smuggling in gold coins from Kuwait
Air Customs officials today seized gold coins illegally brought here as part of a smuggling racket, from a woman passenger who arrived from Kuwait at the airport this morning.
According to airport sources, the gold coins, import of which has been banned by Indian government, numbering 138 and each weighing 10 gms, were recovered from the inner ware of the woman passenger Damim Bano(45), who confessed to customs officials that a smuggling gang had given her commission for clandestinely bringing the coins from Kuwait.
When the Customs officialsw queswtioned her while checking her baggage soon after she arrived by a Kuwait Airlines flight at 1030 hrs this morning, Bano said she had nothing else to declare.
However, the Customs officials who were not satisfied with her explanation and suspected her, turned her over to woman customs officier to check her. This yielded them the gold coins, valued at Rs 50 crore.
The woman was immedately arrested and taken for further questioning. The woman employed in Kuwait, hailed from Chennai.
