Sericulture a viable avenue for unemployed educated youth: Dr Samoon
Laying special emphasis on post cocoon production, Jammu and Kashmir agriculture production department said sericulture could be a viable avenue for unemployed youths in the state.
Chairing a high level meeting of Multi Task Force Committee on sericulture, Dr Asgar Hassan Samoon discussed many issues pertaining to the promotion and development of Silk Industry in the state with senior officials, an official spokesman said here today.
He said special emphasis was laid on post cocoon production which involves silk reeling, silk weaving, printing and dyeing to improve value addition and create employment generation avenues.
Director sericulture development department, Dr Malik Farooq apprised the meeting that silk reeling units have been established and more units need to be set up involving automatic reeling units so that 60 per cent of the cocoon crop is consumed locally besides can fetch better results for cocoon rearers which otherwise is purchased by the people from outside state.
The meeting was told that a comprehensive action plan has been formulated to develop Post Cocoon Sector on modern lines.
In Pre-Cocoon Sector which involves silkworm rearing, the Department of Sericulture has achieved remarkable success in improving and enhancing quality cocoon production with the result,the cocoon production has become attractive and profitable in the State.
However, there is need to utilise this production locally for value addition.
