A sexagenarian was killed and ten injured, five of them critically, when a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) they were travelling in rammed into the rear side of a lorry at Aruppukottai on the Madurai-Tirunelveli Four Lane, here today.


Police said the occupants of the car, hailing from Kadapah in Andhra Pradesh, were on a pilgrimage to various temples in Tamil Nadu when the tragedy occurred.

The deceased was identified as Venkata Subbaiah (62). Subbaiah along with his family members were proceeding to Kanniyakumari after offering worship at 'Lord Subramnya Swamy Temple' at Tiruttani.

Soon after the accident, police and personnel of Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services Department rushed to the spot and rescued the injured people from the mangled remains of the SUV.

Of the injured, five critically injured were shifted to Government Rajaji Hospital at Madurai while the remaining were admitted to the government hospital at Aruppukottai.
