Thousands of devotees from various parts of the country witnessed the "Thirukkalyanam'(Celestial Wedding) of Goddess Meenakshi with Lord Sundareswarar at the world-renowned 'Sri Meenakshi-Sundareswarar Temple," here today.

Amid chanting of Vedic hymns by the temple priests and playing of traditional musical instruments, the divine wedding was solemnised on a specially erected dais at the junction of North and West Adi Streets inside the temple premises at 1047 hrs.

As per temple tradition, two 'Sivacharyas' (Priests), representing the bride and the bridegroom, performed the rituals, as part of the ongoing 12-day annual 'Chithirai Brahmotsavam' festival.

Later, the idols of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar were taken out in a grand procession on a palanquin and a silver elephant respectively to the 'Thiru Kalyana Mandapam' for public darshan.

About 5000 police personnel, including Swift Action Force were deployed throughout the city, especially around the temple for security.

The entire event was monitored by the police through Closed Circuit Cameras that were installed at various places inside the temple.
