Two adult elephants, which were struggling for life for last few days at Moyyar River near Bhavani Sagar in the district, died one after the other last evening.

Forest Department sources here said wild elephants frequented the river for drinking water at Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve Forest Area.

On Wednesday last, while consuming water, one adult elephant slipped into the river due to loose sand. Since, it was unable to stand up, other elephants tried to pull it out but in vain.

The forest officials tried to save the elephants by pulling them with rope. Though they succeeded in the effort, the elephant was not able to stand as it had suffered a fracture in its leg. They started treating the elephant.

Another 15-year-old pachyderm fell after consuming water at the same place on Thursday. Though the forest officials brought the elephant to the river bank using poclain, this elephant also was not able to stand on its own. These two elephants died one after another last evening, the sources added.
