Meghalaya gets Rs 4 crore from NEC for bus terminus at Shillong
The long awaited inter-state bus terminus (ISBT) in the city has finally taken shape with the North Eastern Council (NEC) releasing an amount of Rs 4 crore to the state government for the project.
Transport Minister, H D R Lyngdoh today said out of the total amount sanctioned for the construction of ISBT, the NEC has already released Rs 4 crore to the state government.
"The PWD (National Highway) will float tender for the project soon," Mr Lyngdoh said adding that the total project cost was estimated at Rs 48.31 crore.
The Transport Minister also informed that a ten-acre land for constructing the ISBT has already been acquired at Mawlai Mawong, in the city's suburb.
Meanwhile, the Transport Department is also trying to identify a suitable location along National Highway-40 for the construction of an inter-state truck terminus (ISTT). According to Mr Lyngdoh, land for the truck terminus has been identified but a decision is yet to be taken since officials are assessing if the site was suitable for the project.
In January 2012, the state government had received in principle the approval from the Planning Commission regarding the proposal to construct both ISBT and ISTT in the state. The cost for the construction of ISTT is estimated to be Rs 26 crore.
