The Lt Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lt Gen (Retd) A K Singh has asked the Doordarshan Kendra Port Blair and All India Radio unit Port Blair to upgrade their coverage to reach all the inhabited islands of Andaman and Nicobar Chain.

'AIR and Doordarshan can play a critical role, especially during natural disasters, they should have an effective reach. In case of such emergencies, the relays should be available round the clock to help communicate regular forecast and warnings to the Islanders to safeguard their life and property, ' the Lt Governor said.

During a review meeting at Raj Niwas of Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Thursday, the Lt Governor directed both the broadcasters to ultimately start service 24X7.

'Local Doordarshan programmes should be available on Saturdays and Sundays also. All important functions and activities do not only require local exposure but also coverage in national media through Doordarshan and AIR,' the Lt Governor directed.

Presently, AIR, Port Blair has a reach upto Mayabunder only whereas it is expected to cover even southernmost Islands.

The Lt Governor directed the Station Officers to project their requirements to the Administration, so that they could be taken up with the Information and Broadcasting Ministry.

In addition, they were advised to make further efforts to regularly include the activities taking place in A and N Islands for national telecast also.
