Torrential rains lashed several parts of Andhra Pradesh in the last 24 hours under the influence of a low pressure area, causing damage to standing crops over hundreds of acres.

The moderate to heavy rains caused extensive damage to mango and paddy crops besides disrupting power supply in many areas including parts of the state capital last night, according to official sources.

Adoni in Kurnool district was battered by heavy rain, flooding roads and low lying areas in the town. Temperatures in many parts of the state also fell due to the untimely rains. A silver lining was that the rains offered respite to the people in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad and parts of the state from heatwave conditions in the state for the last several days.

Some billboards, electric and telephone polls, and tress were uprooted in the city due to rain accompanied by strong winds last evening.

Meanwhile, the weather office today forecast more rain with heavy spells at some places in Telangana, Rayalaseema and coastal regions during the next 48 hours.

The met office said due to the formation of the low pressure area, there was too much moisture incursion towards Andhra Pradesh from the Arabian sea and the Bay of Bengal leading to thunderstorm activity and the resultant rains.
