IUML wants SC to review verdict on Mullapperiyar
Expressing serious concern over the Supreme Court striking down Kerala government legislation on Mullapperiyar Dam, the Indian Union Muslim League today urged the apex court to review the verdict.
Talking to reporters here, IUML State General Secretary K P A Majeed said the verdict appears to be silent on the alleged threat perception to thousands of people living in the catchment areas if more than centuryold dam gave away.
It was sad that the highest court in the land had not considered the state government's proposal for a new dam as recommended in the legislation, he said.
The condition of the dam built by the British was a major threat to people living in the surrounding localities, he added.
In a major jolt to the state, the SC earlier in the day, struck down an Act that has sought to restrict the water level in Mullaperiyar Dam at 136 feet.
The constitution bench headed by Chief Justice R M Lodha, while striking down the Kerala Irrigation Water Conservation Act, said the water level in the dam could be increased to 142 feet.
