Dr Sarvamangala Shankar has taken charge as the new Vice-Chancellor of the Karnataka State Dr Gangubai Hangal Music and Performing Arts University here.

The post was lying vacant since December last, when the first Vice-Chancellor of the university, Hanumanna Nayak Dore, got retired.

Dr Shankar was earlier the associate professor and Head of the Department of Music at the Maharani's Arts, Commerce and Management College for Women, Bangalore.

She took charge last evening from Registrar Y.S. Siddegowda.

She was trained in music under Rangappa and Shantakumari, Bellary M. Sheshagiri Achar, B. Krishnappa, R K Srikantan, V Ramaratnam and others. Apart from being a vocalist, she is well-versed in veena and mridangam.

She has over 35 years of teaching experience. In addition, she has given numerous Carnatic music concerts in India and abroad and rendered bhakti sangeetha, sugama sangeetha and vachana sangeetha since 1974.

She was an artiste for Doordarshan and All India Radio. She has authored many books on music, apart from publishing and presenting innumerable papers and articles at important conferences. Dr Shankar has also composed music for several vachanas, keertanas and written a few kritis in Kannada.
