Karuna hails Supreme Court order on Mullaiperiyar dam issue
DMK President M Karunanidhi today hailed the Supreme Court verdict allowing Tamil Nadu to increase the storage level in the Mullaiperiyar Dam to 142 ft, while striking down the law enacted by Kerala as "Unconstitutional and void", preventing TN from raising the water level.
Reacting to the apex court order, Mr Karunanidhi told reporters here today that he was happy over the Supreme Court's verdict, which ended the eight-year-old long wait of Tamil Nadu, which filed a suit in April 2006, seeking to declare the Law enacted by Kerala as Unconstitutional.
"The Court has asked Kerala not to construct the check dam (on the ground that the existing dam is weak)", the DMK Chief said, adding, he did not wish to go into the details of the order.
Earlier, in the day, in what was considered as a major victory for Tamil Nadu, the Supreme Court declared as Unconstitutional the law enacted by Kerala in 2006, constituting the Dam Safety Authority to prevent the State from increasing the storage level from the existing 136 ft to 142 ft.
