Left Democratic Front convener Vaikom Viswan today demanded that the government bring in place a total ban on the import of natural rubber in the wake of the steep fall in rubber price.

He was speaking after inaugurating the human chain here, organised by CPM district committee to protest against the rubber price fall.

He also called upon the State and Central governments to initiate urgent steps to protect the interest of the rubber farmers, who fell into severe crisis in view of the plummeting price of the rubber. 'Instead of protecting the farmers from crisis, authorities are keen to protect the interests of the corporates and keeping away from intervening in the issue,' he said.

According to him, ban on import of rubber can bring immediate relief to the farmer. He also lashed out at the State government for its failure to carry out the much hyped market intervention programme. 'Instead of the 10,000 tonnes they were expected to lift from internal market at a higher rate, the government has only procured a 250 tonnes,' he said.

CPM district secretary K J Thomas inaugurated the public meeting held at Erattupetta as part of he protest. CPM Idukki district secretary M M Mani inaugurated the human chain held in Mundakkayam.

Scores of people, including rubber farmers, merchants associated with rubber market participated in the human chain in all the 13 area committees of the party in the district, demanding that the government initiate urgent steps to save rubber farmers from crisis.
