At least 21 people were killed as a boat carrying tourists capsized in the Bay of Bengal near Port Blair town in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Sunday, reports said.


According to reports, the mishap occurred at around 4 pm between Ross Island and North Bay.

The boat named Aqua Marine was carrying 43 tourists.

At least 13 people have been rescued so far, NDTV reported quoting Lt Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands AK Singh.

They have been admitted to the GB Pant Hospital in Port Blair.

Rescue operations is currently going on.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has expressed shock over the boat tragedy and has condoled the loss of lives.

"An Aqua Marine with 43 tourists on-board capsized between Ross Island and North Bay near Port Blair in Andaman earlier in the day. The Prime Minister has asked all central agencies to immediately assist in the rescue and relief operations," the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said in a statement.

An ex-gratia amount of Rs 1 lakh has been announced to the family of each victim.
