In a novel protest on May 1, the International Workers Day, women textile workers in Kozhikode city of Kerala today launched an agitation for their right to sit during spare time.

A large number of sales women of textile showrooms participated in the stir, fearing job loss, by sitting from Kidson corner to Sweatmeat Street, a major business centre in this historic city.

Leaders of the Unorganized Sector Workers Union, who patronised the stir said the saleswomen who were compelled to work more than the stipulated eight hours were not even allowed to sit during their spare time.

They said the show owners insisted them to be on their feet for the entire work hours. Noted activists K Ajitha, Gro Vasu among others addressed the gathering.
