QED to support Congress in Varanasi against Modi
In a surprising move, Quami Ekta Dal(QED) today announced it would support Congress candidate Ajay Rai in Varanasi where he is pitted against BJP PM candidate Narendra Modi.
The announcement was made by QED president Afzal Ansari after over a fortnight-long discussions with the party leaders.
Earlier, it was predicted that QED could support Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Arvind Kejriwal as QED candidate from Mau and younger brother of Afzal, Mukhtar Ansari is accused in the murder of the elder brother of Ajay Rai.
Afzal, talking to reporters here, said the decision to support the Congress candidate was taken in the larger interest to prevent communal forces from coming to power.
'We will actively campaign for the Congress during the elections in Varanasi, and will ask the people particularly the minorities to vote for Ajay Rai,' he said.
But the sudden change in the decision of the QED to support Congress has created a new equation in the elections in Varanasi, where polling is scheduled in the last phase on May 12.
Earlier, Mukhtar Ansari, the MLA of QED, at present lodged in the Agra jail for different crimes, was to contest from Varanasi along with Ghosi seat. But later the party withdrew his name to avoid division of the minority votes against Modi.
Mukhtar is presently contesting from Ghosi seat.
