UPA confident of forming Government on its own: Congress
Dismissing talk of the Congress supporting a third front government, the party today said the UPA was confident of forming a government on its own after the Lok Sabha polls.
''The UPA has no doubts about forming a Government on its own after the Lok Sabha polls,'' AICC spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi told reporters.
Replying to a question on the interview of Congress president Sonia Gandhi s political secretary Ahmed Patel in which he was reported to have said the Congress was open to the idea of supporting a third front Government, Mr Singhvi said, ''The Congress-led UPA is confident of forming a Government on its own strength after the Lok Sabha polls.''
In an interview to a National daily, Mr Patel was quoted as saying that the Congress may consider dropping its claim to lead the next 'secular' coalition at the Centre and lend support to a non-BJP front in order to deny Narendra Modi the prime ministership.
''Congress is not hankering after power. The party can consider all options necessary to deny power to communal forces (read BJP). The final decision will be taken by the Congress president after due consultation with all colleagues,'' Mr Patel was quoted as saying in the interview. However, Mr Patel, in a tweet earlier today, clarified his comment.
''Congress is confident of winning Lok Sabha polls and question of supporting 3rd Front is hypothetical,'' Mr Patel tweeted. Mr Patel said he was misquoted in the said interview.
Replying to queries of Mr Patel s interview, Mr Singhvi said, ''Mr Ahmed Patel has already said in a tweet that he was misquoted in the interview.''
