The villagers of Talwad-M in Bhalki Taluk refused to allow last rites of a man convicted of rape and murder forcing the family to bury the mortal remains in the city.

Thirty five year-old Jotiba Maharaj, who was convicted to death on charges of sexual assault of a 7-year-old girl and murdering her, committed suicide on April 26 by hanging himself with a bath towel from a tap.

The Bidar District Court had sentenced him to death for the crime committed in 2012.

Yesterday, the convict's wife and relatives faced resistance from villagers when they tried to take home the body for conducting the last rites.

The villagers said that the village had no place for the body of a sinner. The relative had to bury the body in Gulbarga yesterday, police source added.
