Activists of various associations and organisations staged a massive demonstration in protest against the laying High Tension (HT) Power line to Kerala, passing through Kodagu, which they said had adversely affected life in South Kodagu and resulted in the destruction of hundreds of trees.

Hundreds of activists, who gathered in front of the DC's office raised slogans such as 'Save Kodagu in its original form' and 'Save Cauvery.'

Basavanna Devara Jana Samrakshana Trust leader Dr B C Nanjappa, who addressed the protestors, said that the HT power line would severely obstruct the flow of Cauvery river due to rampant tree felling, posing threat to 8 crore people along the Cauvery basin. Although the matter is serious, the DC has been unresponsive and apathetic to the apprehensions of the people, he alleged.

Cauvery Sene's Raghu Machaiah said that the Union Environment Ministry has given nod for the power transmission line restricting the works to only marked areas of forest land and not for privately owned land. But despite this fact, the District Administrations has registered cases against 43 men who opposed the works in private land of Nittur section, he alleged.
