Police today arrested the mother-in-law and another woman, her relative, in connection with the killing of the 19-year-old girl of another caste who was set ablaze. The girl was set ablaze by her mother-in-law. The victim Shilpa Naik, who lives in Mysore, had married one Abhijith, a mechanic, a few months ago after the two had a love affair for two years.

However, the boy's family was against the marriage. But the couple went ahead with the marriage.

The boy's mother Nagamma and others had hatched a plan to kill Shilpa and lured her to visit their Kannahalli village near Malavalli. Then the mother in law, a relative and her husband, took her out and tried to strangulate her to death. When the girl tried to flee the scene, they caught her and poured kerosene on her and set her ablaze. Abhijith had not come to the village as he had work.

Shilpa had suffered 50 per cent burns and admitted to hospital here. She had given her statement to police identifying her attackers but died later, yesterday.

The arrested were identified as mother-in-law Nagamma and the boy's aunt Prameela. Her husband Puttaswamy is absconding.

Meanwhile the Mandya district administration completed the cremation of the body in presence of Shilpa's mother and other relatives today.

The cremation was held under the supervision of the Tahasildar Mamatha today after the postmortem. The cost of last rites was borne by the district administration as the mother of the victim had no money.

The girl's father Murugesh, who works as a construction labourer in Tamil Nadu, returned today and demanded stringent punishment to the boy's family. He will fight till the end to ensure this, he said.
